I love Georgia Heard’s book AWAKENING THE HEART and her heart map classroom activity. I didn’t know about Heard’s heart maps when I wrote about Margie’s Map of Me but Heard’s project, drawing the things closest to your heart, is similar to Margie’s assignment to map her “insides”.
Heard’s concept of querencia or heart’s home (from her book WRITING TOWARDS HOME) was a core inspiration for my award-winning graduate thesis HIT THE ROAD, JACK- AND JILL. I should have known her work with kids and classrooms would inspire my novel, too!
